$1.6Million Colt a New Benchmark for Extreme Choice

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 10

Newgate Farm’s Extreme Choice will never have the numbers of other champion sires, but he has quality over quantity and set a new benchmark for himself in the sale ring at Magic Millions on Wednesday when Milburn Creek’s stunning colt from Wanted Lady sold for $1.6million to James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership.

The full brother to two modest winners, he is the fourth foal from Wanted Lady, a winning half-sister to stakes-winner Missy Cummings, the dam of Group I winner Mizzy with stakes-winners Laced Up Heels and Lady Knockout also in the immediate family.

It was a dream result for his breeder Luke Wilkinson, who has been a big fan of Extreme Choice having bid on him successfully as Bloodstock Manager for trainer Mick Price at Inglis Classic back in 2015.

“It is a dream for a breeder… I can’t put it into words,” Wilkinson said.

“I paid $100,000 (for Extreme Choice) and got yelled at by Mick (Price) for paying too much for him. It took a while to sell him and when he raced he’s obviously won a Blue Diamond and went to stud.

“When he went to stud I was able to get a lifetime breeding right.

“I love the horse and he was great for my career and I loved him to death. I have alway supported him and sent extra mares. Lucky that this mare has been in foal to him three times and this is the best foal by a long, long way.

“From the moment he was born, Peter Orton was straight on the phone saying this is outstanding.”

Wanted Lady has been a regular visitor to Newgate and has a colt foal by Wild Ruler and was covered again by Extreme Choice last spring.

Extreme Choice has nine more yearlings to be offered at this sale.

“Extreme Choice is freakish in what he’s done, not just with racehorses, but he’s already got good sons at stud with really legitimate chances,” said James Harron.

“He was one that we identified that we really loved as a physical type and we’re very pleased to get him.

“We try to take the stallion away from it and try not to be too altered by that, we just want to look at the horse and how he stands up himself as a type and he really was one of my favourite physical types in the sale.

“He’s that two-year-old shape, he’s strong, he’s well-balanced and he showed a really good, willing attitude throughout the sale.

“The Extreme Choice factor is what puts the price tag on, but I just loved hm as an individual.”

Extreme Choice has nine more yearlings to be offered in Book 1 in coming days.
