60k Investment Mare Sells for $775,000

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 25

A savvy $60,000 investment on a mare at the 2020 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale by Twin Hills Stud/ G1 Goldmine produced big dividends ats the same sale on Thursday when Magical Mist (NZ) sold for $775,000 to Yulong.

A metropolitan winner by High Chaparral (IRE), Magical Mist started her sales life when purchased as a yearling at Karaka Book 1 for $200,000 by John Chalmers Bloodstock back in 2011.

She has been sold at auction four more times since then as a broodmare before arriving back in the ring today, but in the intervening years since her stud career began Magical Mist has proven to be that prized of all commodities a serious stakes producer.

She was offered in foal to Maurice (Jpn) on an early cover.

Magical Mist has had four foals to race and all are winners with three of them stakes-winners – Group III winners Ballistic Boy (Smart Missile), Splendiferous (Pride of Dubai) and now Yellow Brick Road (The Mission), who is set to run in the Group I Stradbroke Handicap.

“She’s doing it with all different stallions, which is a sign of a good mare. They’re not necessarily stallions that are in the top 10 in the sires list but she’s producing good horses,” said Sam Fairgray after adding Magical Mist to the long list of Yulong purchases at this sale.

Olly Tailt was thrilled the the result.

“We’re delighted. It’s a lot of money, she’s a beautiful mare, she’s given us so much excitement since we’ve owned her," he said.

“Splendiferous obviously became a Group III winner after we bought the mare and Yellow Brick in the last 12 months, becoming the horse that he has and looking like he’s going to do even better things.”

Tait will be cheering Yellow Brick Road on if he goes on to achieve G1 success.

“I hope he does. Yulong bought her, so I wish them all the best with her and I’d be delighted if he comes out and wins the Stradbroke for the mare and them,” he added

“Our business is selling horses and you’ve got to take an opportunity when it presents itself.

“She was in-foal on an early September cover to a stallion that is attractive, so it was the right time to sell her and let someone else go on with her.”
