John Singleton got a big pay day when selling his beloved Strawberry Hill Stud to Tom Magnier of Coolmore in 2023, but he gave a little back at Magic Millions on Thursday when paying $875,000 for the Coolmore consigned Wootton Bassett (GB) filly from Lady Piaf.
An elegant, near black filly with undeniable star quality, she is the first foal of Lady Piaf, a placed I Am Invincible grand-daughter of dual Group I winner Lady Jakeo, whose descendants Group I winning sprinter Mrs Onassis and Group winning sprint mares Passive Aggressive and Missrock
The glamour girl was knocked down to Clarry Conners under his Victory Lodge banner and the veteran Warwick Farm trainer will be looking to relive the glory days when he won the 2000 Golden Slipper for John Singleton with Belle du Jour.
“The Wootton Bassetts have been going great and we think they are two-year-olds so we were naturally interested,” Clarry Conners said.
“My client (John Singleton) was interested. We picked out two or three and we liked her a lot. She reminded me of, strangely, very much of Belle Du Jour. Light legged, light on her feet. Nice filly. Not over big, just racy.
“It is a good family and as long as we win races with her, I’ll be happy.”
Lady Piaf had a filly last year by St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) and is back in foal to him again.
