Winning Debut for Your Song's Super News

Mark Smith - Thursday May 11

The 2yo Your Song gelding Super News made a winning career debut in the Coca-Cola Europacific Maiden (1100m) at Wyong on Thursday in a manner that suggests better days ahead.

Caught three and four wide the trip, Super News gave trainer Kim Waugh and jockey Jay Ford their second winner in the first three races.

Super News defeated the $600,000 I am Invincible colt Absolute Power by a length, with Russian Revolution colt Ramius three-quarters of a length back in third.

Kim Waugh knows the family well as the powerfully built son of Your Song is the latest success story for long-time stable clients Jimmy and Betty Yee.

“I trained his dam (Wonderful News) and (half) sisters Great News (Uncle Mo) and Newsfan (Zoffany),” Kim Waugh said.

“It’s a very good family going back to Magic Feather and Mother Duck.

“I have a very big opinion of him, but he is so green and mentally immature. He is beautiful, and I think he will be a very good horse.

“We drew the car park, and I was tossing up whether to run. I said to Jay, ‘just work it out’.

“He was four deep the whole way. It was such a good effort. Once he got balanced, he put his foot down and said see ya."

Your Song

Super News is the fifth winner for the Clang mare Wonderful News.

Restricted to just two starts, Wonderful News has erased the disappointment of her career on the track in the broodmare barn.

Great News won five and placed in nine of her 16 starts while banking $355,870. She was runner-up in the Group III Toy Show Stakes and third in the Group III Tibbie Stakes and Listed Mona Lisa Stakes. She would later sell to Trilogy Racing for $230,000.

Newsfan won three and was runner-up in five of her nine starts, earning $263,840.

Wonderful News is a half-sister to another grand performer for the stable, Listed Winter Stakes winner Oxford Poet (Dylan Thomas), an 8-time winner of $730,410.

Super News is the first two-year-old winner of the season for Gooree Stud’s Fastnet Rock stallion Your Song and comes on the eve of his five-length romp over Rain affair, Better Than Ready, Buffering, and Spirit of Boom in the 2013 Group 1 BRC BTC (Kingsford – Smith) Cup.
