Yulong based Grunt posted his first winner at Pakenham on Thursday night and he did it in style with Veight bolting in to win by six lengths.
Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Veight was a class above, strolling home to win the 1200m juvenile maiden as he pleased under Damian Lane.
“That was very exciting. It was lovely to see him come to the races and do that,” said Tony McEvoy.
“He’s always pleased us at home, but he’s not a sprinter. We had him up a while ago, bit the races were all at 1000m, so we backed off him and freshened him up and waited for this. We think he’s a miler, but it was an easy watch and a lovely watch.”
Veight was a $220,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Sledmere Stud draft for McEvoy Mitchell Racing / Belmont Bloodstock and was a successful pinhook having been bought as a weanling from Yulong at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $100,000.
He is the second winner from Group III winning Fastnet Rock mare Neena Rock, who has a yearling filly by Grunt and was covered last spring by Tagaloa after missing the year before.
