Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 9

There were four heats for juveniles at Randwick on Monday morning and all eyes were on exciting I Am Invincible colt King’s Gambit and he didn’t disappoint.

The first stakes-winner for a joint breeding venture between Newgate Farm and Gooree Stud, the Peter and Paul Snowden trained King’s Gambit was breathtakingly good when winning the Listed MRC Debutant Stakes (1000m) in October.

He looked super impressive in his first trial since then, eased from the gates by Tommy Berry and encouraged to settle off the pace before extending to the line to win by three-quarters of a length.

The yearling half-sister by Snitzel to King’s Gambit has been scratched from Magic Millions which is probably a good indication that connections believe this talented colt can go all the way in the autumn.

Capitalist has been churning out the winners in recent weeks and had two heat winners.

Second in the Inglis Banner and sixth in the Golden Gift, the Michael Freedman trained colt Mexico looked big and strong winning his heat although Barber, who won the Golden Gift was an eye-catcher with his very quiet third. Also worth a look fourth placed Stanislaus, the half-brother to Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile.

Mexico has a full sister to be offered at Inglis Classic as Lot 656 by Sledmere Stud.

The John O’Shea trained colt Capital Heart was having his first trial and did everything right to race forward from the jump and find the lead for Kerrin McEvoy. Despite looking green in his action, he kept up a good gallop to win the heat by over a length over unraced Gun, a son of Extreme Choice that has been gelded since the last time we saw him and showed improvement at his third trial and best so far.

Third in the heat having his first trial was Pirate, the Merchant Navy half-brother to Champion 2YO Filly Away Game. He showed some talent and am keen to see him again based on this.

The other heat winner was Godolphin’s homebred Lonhro filly Dipsy Doodle.
