HTBA Welcome Ban on Open Cut Mining

Media Release - Saturday October 22

An announcement that the NSW Government will legally ban open cut mining at Dartbrook has been welcomed by the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.

Speaking at Yarraman Park Stud, Dr Cameron Collins thanked the NSW Racing Minister, the Hon. Kevin Anderson and local Upper Hunter MP, Mr Dave Layzell for listening to the Upper Hunter community and acting.

“The HTBA has been advocating for this legal certainty since the Government announced it did not support open cut coal mining at Dartbrook both during the Upper Hunter by-election and in the Strategic Statement on Coal Exploration and Mining.

The Government’s agreement to legally rule out open cut coal mining at the site is welcomed” Dr Cameron Collins said. “It provides us with the certainty and confidence we have been seeking on this matter.”

“We particularly wish to thank our local member of parliament, Mr Dave Layzell, for his unwavering persistence in delivering on this by-election commitment” Dr Collins said

The Upper Hunter has a proud 200-year heritage as Australia’s Horse Capital. It is an integral part of the fabric of Australian society and has a long, strong and sustainable future.

Properly supported and protected, it can expand and grow and continue to play an important role as a key pillar of economic growth as we transition into a new era in the Hunter and for many hundreds of years to come.
