First Stakes-Winner for Supido

Tara Madgwick - Saturday September 10

A bargain priced option on the Widden Stud NSW roster, promising young Sebring stallion Supido put his name in lights on Saturday when his talented son Buenos Noches overcame difficulty to win the Listed VRC Poseidon stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

Buenos Noches made a winning debut for the Matthew Smith stable at Canterbury last month and then was a luckless sixth in the Group III ATC San Domenico Stakes.

Ridden by Craig Newitt, Buenos Noches was looking like he was going to be a victim of bad luck once again when he was severely hampered by Spacewalk over the concluding stages.

Spacewalk took the win, while Buenos Noches recovered to surge late and finish a close second with stewards reversing the decision on protest.

"From the 600 metres he really started to get up underneath me and from the 400 metres it was just a matter of trying to get a run," Newitt said.

"For a horse to be poleaxed his last start, still race really tractably and then be stood on his head at the 100 metres and get going again and get within a neck shows he's pretty good.

"He's a good horse, simple as that. He'll go to the Danehill (Stakes) in a couple of weeks and I think you'll find he'll take a power of beating and I presume then onto the Coolmore (Stud Stakes).

"For a horse that's very lightly-raced, he'd a pretty good colt."

A $40,000 Inglis Classic Highway Session purchase for his trainer from the Widden Stud draft, Buenos Noches runs for a big group of very happy stable clients.

Buenos Noches was a $40,000 Inglis Classic purchase.

Buenos Noches has two wins from three starts earning over $146,000 in prizemoney and holds an entry for the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas.

Bred by Widden Stud in partnership, Buenos Noches is the second winner from unraced Northern Meteor mare Koi, a grand-daughter of triple Group I winning Champion NZ 2YO Filly Ballroom Babe.

Sadly Koi died in 2021 and her final foal is an unnamed two year-old colt by Star Witness.

Buenos Noches is the first stakes-winner for brilliant Sebring sprinter Supido, who stands at a fee of $8,800 this spring.

Supido

He is also the first stakes-winner to combine the blood of Widden Stud’s former champion sires Sebring (sire of Supido) and Northern Meteor, the sire of his dam Koi.
