Breeding thoroughbreds is far from an exact science and while two plus two might equal four, the same sum does not always deliver the same result when it comes to racehorses and we saw that fact highlighted at Eagle Farm.
David Vandyke was delighted get a second win from four year-old Shamus Award mare Amity Gal, who scored by nearly two lengths as a short priced favourite over 1000m
Retained to race by her breeders, Amity Gal has two wins, both at 1000m and two placings from five starts and looks set for a good campaign, but what is really interesting about her is that she is a full sister to triple Group I winning mare Duais.
Duais is at her best at 2000m and longer with the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups on her radar for this spring, while Amity Gal is a much speedier filly, although their Group III winning half-sister Baccarat Baby (by Casino Prince) probably falls somewhere between the two in distance range proving effective from 1200 to 1650m.
Amity Gal is the fourth winner from Johannesburg (USA) mare Meerlust, a modest winner over 1000m who claims legendary matriarch Fanfreluch as her third dam.
Meerlust has a yearling filly by All Too Hard and was covered last spring by Bivouac.
