Deep Field 2YO Filly Salutes

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday July 20

Newgate Farm’s Deep Field has had a benchmark year in Hong Kong finishing as the Champion Sire by earnings and he is also having a good year here in Australia with his juveniles posting his 17th two-year-old winner this season at Randwick on Wednesday.

The Mark Newnham trained filly Cruizingdafield was a good third on debut at the same venue two weeks ago and was sent out favourite for the 1100m juvenile fillies maiden.

She made light of the heavy ground, tracking forward to lead for Tom Sherry and then fighting on all the way to the line to hold off a good challenge from the gallant runner-up Waikiki, a first starter by Capitalist, to win by three-quarters of a length.

uo;She ran well on debut and backed it up again today,” said Mark Newnham.

“She was passed in at the sales and her breeder rang me and asked me if I would like to train her and so far so good.”

Her rider Tom Sherry was also happy with the filly.

“She’s got natural speed and got into a good rhythm in front,” he said.

“It was very testing conditions, so it was a really good effort to win.”

Cruizingdafield was passed in shy of her reserve when offered by Mane Lodge at the Inglis HTBA May Sale and retained by her Canberra based breeders.

Cruisingdafield was passed in as a yearling.

She is the first winner for Calaway Cruizer, a winning half-sister by High Chaparral (IRE) to the dam of Group winners Hard Merchandize and Trumbull.

Covered by Starspangledbanner last spring after having a year off in 2020, Calaway Cruizer is a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Calaway Gal.
