Lord Kanaloa's Kween Kanali Impresses on Debut

Mark Smith - Sunday July 3

With a Blue Diamond in the trophy cabinet courtesy of Tagaloa, Trent Bussutin and Natalie Young have every right to love the progeny of Lord Kanaloa (JPN), and they have another promising type by the champion Japanese sprinter in Kween Kanali.

The 3yo filly made a winning debut over 1400m on the Pakenham Synthetic on Sunday.

With Billy Egan in the saddle, Kween Kanali was perfectly positioned one out and one back but soon found herself shuffled back through the field when the backmarkers began to swoop.

Threading the needle shortly after straightening, Kween Kanali set out after the tiring favourite Guantanamera (Street Boss), then held the challenge of the experienced Toorak Toff gelding Listen To Me Jack by a neck.

Bred by Arrowfield Group and Jungle Pocket Pty Ltd, Kween Kanali races for Ozzie Kheir and partners.

daughter of Lord Kanaloa was due to be the first lot of the 2020 Easter Yearling Sale before Arrowfield withdrew all 63 yearlings from the COVID-impacted sale.

Kween Kanali is the sixth foal and second winner for the Group II German One Thousand Guineas heroine Kali (GER) (Areion).

Bjorn Baker Racing / Clarke Bloodstock (FBAA) went to $140,000 to secure Kali’s Pariah colt at the 2022Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

After missing in 2020 and 2021, Kali (GER) sold online for just $600 in March.
