Second Stakes Success for Online Bargain Charmmebaby

Mark Smith - Saturday June 11

The Laurie Mayfield-Smith-trained Charmmebaby continues to make a mockery of her $14,000 purchase from the Inglis 2020 May Online Sale with a second stakes success in Saturday’s Listed Wayne Wilson Plate at Eagle Farm.

Ridden by Craig Williams, the 5yo daughter of Charm Spirit defeated Kubrick (Shooting To Win) by a short-neck with Kirwan’s Lane (Charm Spirit) a nose back in third.

The winner of the Listed Brisbane Handicap when making her debut for Mayfield-Smith last December, Charmmebaby advances her record to nine wins, six seconds, and two thirds from 36 starts, with earnings of $547,865.

“She’s better this time than last time, though she was pretty good last time, Mayfield-Smith said.

“She’s just stronger, and I think backing her up just took that edge off here, where she wasn’t throwing her head and carrying on.

“He (Williams) is a genius, I wish he’d stay up here.

“They (owners) wanted black-type, and she’s now run in four black-type races here, won two, probably unlucky in another and ran second last week in one. The value of her as a broodmare is going to go up considerably.”

Originally purchased for $18,000 from the Prima Park draft from Book 3 at Karaka,  Charmmebaby is a half-sister to Listed New Zealand St Leger winner Vikja King (Viking Ruler) out of the Zabeel mare Lithe.

Charmmebaby is the seventh of the eight foals from Lithe.
