Pedigree Watch – UK G1

Tara Madgwick - Friday June 3

Two Group I races decided overnight at Epsom with the Epsom Oaks once again won by a daughter of Galileo, whose half-brother Sea the Stars sired the winner of the Group I Coronation Cup.

The Group I Epsom Oaks (1m4f) produced a great contest with the favourite Emily Upjohn (Sea the Stars) going down by a short head in a thrilling finish to the Aidan O’Brien trained Galileo filly Tuesday under Ryan Moore.

Second at her only start in a maiden last year, Tuesday has made rapid progress this year winning her maiden at Naas back in March at her first appearance of 2022 and then placing in both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas races.

Stepped up to a mile and a half, she showed her class to become the 354th stakes-winner for Galileo and his 94th Group I winner. Tuesday is his fifth winner of the Epsom Oaks.

A homebred for Coolmore, Tuesday was winning the Oaks on her birthday having been born on June 3.

She is the third Group I winning filly from dual Group I winning Danehill Dancer mare Lilly Langtry joining Minding and Empress Josephine with another full sister Kissed by Angels a Group III winner.

Tuesday is another success for the very potent Galileo x Danehill Dancer nick that has produced 25 stakes-winners from 104 runners, so has a 24% SW to runner strike rate with eight of those SW’s being G1 winners.

The Group I Coronation Cup (1m4f) was won by Shadwell Stud homebred Hukum, a 5YO stallion by Sea the Stars.

Trained by Owen Burrows, he had been a multiple Group winner previously, but posted his first elite victory with a four and a half length defeat of the favourite Pyledriver.

Hukum is the older full brother to Shadwell’s Champion Miler Baaeed, who is undefeated in winning seven from seven most recently taking out the Group I Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

Hukum is the second Group I winner from stakes-winning Kingmambo mare Aghareed, a daughter of Champion US Turf Mare Lahudood.

He is the 17th Group I winner for Sea the Stars.
