$575,000 Exceed and Excel Colt Tops MM National Yearlings Day 2

Media Release - Wednesday June 1

A smashing colt by Exceed and Excel has topped the National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast today bringing to conclusion a remarkable two weeks of selling.

Julian Blaxland, who described the colt as "one of the best" he'd seen all year, went to $575,000 to secure the prized offering from the Silverstream Consignment.
$575,000 Exceed and Excel colt from Nomothaj topped the sale.

The colt is the first foal of the multiple stakes winning two-year-old Snitzel mare Nomothaj, herself a daughter of group winning juvenile Real Stolle.

"I thought he was the best colt in the sale and I thought he was one of the best colts I’ve seen all year," Blaxland said.

"It's obviously a beautiful family that's been hard to get into and he's been bought for a client in Hong Kong. Exceed and Excel's got an enormous record both here and in Hong Kong. I think on the year he was really well bought."

"Exceed and Excel's one of the world's best stallions, he's out of a really fast, early stakes-winning mare in Nomothaj, so who's to say he can't be a really good horse up there in Hong Kong."

"We'll see what happens, but he’s not going to go straight up to Hong Kong," Blaxland noted. "He'll go through our Newington system - get him going and see where he's at in a few months time. I am excited to get him for that money and this June sale has thrown up a lot of good colts over the years."

Later in the afternoon Catheryne Bruggeman and Paul Moroney teamed up with Tony and Maddysen Sears to secure the Tarzino-Please Leave colt from the Westbury Stud draft for $300,000.

A half brother to The Running Man and full brother to recent winner By Nine, the colt is the fourth living foal of a More Than Ready daughter of Shovoff.

Across two days of yearlings over $14 million was traded on 264 lots sold at an impressive average of $53,076 and clearance rate of 72 per cent.

"I think the yearling sale was quite strong," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "We would have loved a higher clearance rate, but when quality horses walked into the ring buyers were there in droves."

"It's a sale we continue to build upon. It's been a long year in the yearling market with some $620 million spent on yearlings in Australia."

"It was great to have a lot of internationals back here participating at this part of the sale - Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, the Philippines were all very active and it's great that the international buyers are on their way back."

Over the past two weeks the National Sale selling extravaganza grossed over $161 million for 1,126 lots sold at an average price of $143,390 and clearance rate of 81 per cent.

"It's been a fantastic fortnight. There's been some really exciting moments - this is the industry's sale, we all come together and play our part."

"We thank everyone for their support over the past couple of weeks - it's been an extraordinary sale for Magic Millions and the vendors. Each and every year the sale builds on itself. To have a sale that's grossed well over $160 million is incredible really. It's way above our expectations."

"It's been vibrant, it's been exciting - there's been great theatre and it's been a lot of fun. The team works hard - they love putting this event on - it's a real highlight on the global calendar."

Bowditch paid tribute to many people for making the National Sale such a successful event - but was particularly impressed with the efforts of the horse staff in the early days of the sale.

"The staff were the real stars of the show - the weather they had to endure was something quite extraordinary. The truck drivers, they're doing an enormous amount of work, through to our cleaners and caterers, the media team, the bar staff - everyone plays their part -and importantly the Magic Millions team, they're an outstanding outfit, I'm very proud to lead them over what has been a very successful year."

"The buyers came from all over the world in droves and supported a quality lot of horses over the last two weeks. We love having them here - showing them the Gold Coast, showing them a fun time and we look forward to having them back later in the year and again in January," Bowditch added.
