American Pharoah Colt Wins ANZAC Day Stakes

Tara Madgwick - Monday April 25

Talented American Pharoah (USA) colt Tijuana made it two wins in as many starts when he scored a dashing victory in the Listed VRC ANZAC Day stakes (1400m) carrying the special ANZAC colours.

Trained by the Lindsay Park team of Ben and JD Hayes, Tijuana was an easy winner at Pakenham on debut on March 31 and faced a class rise going straight into a Black Type contest at just his second start.

He proved more than ready for the challenge, working forward from an inside draw to race on the lead and kicked well clear down the running.

Tijuana was strong to the line and won by three-quarters of a length and has now won over $100,000 in prizemoney for his big team of owners, who were keen to celebrate.

“Great result for Jarred from Best Bloodstock, he’s got his colours coming through at the moment and has had some really good success, so to buy a horse like this and win a stakes race at your second start and win like that is very exciting,” said Ben Hayes.

“I was impressed with his manners today, first up he was a little bit colty, but today he knew what he was doing and had the race won a long way from home.”

Ben Hayes will allow the dust to settle before deciding on the immediate future for Tijuana with Queensland options to be considered as  well as his spring potential.

A $100,000 Magic Millions purchase for  Best Bloodstock Pty Ltd/Lindsay Park Racing from the Eureka Stud draft, Tijuana is a half-brother to stakes-placed Mexican Tycoon and is the fourth winner from Champion Singapore 2YO Mexican Rose.

Bred by Eureka Stud in partnership with Black Soil Bloodstock, Tijuana is sadly the last living foal from Mexican Rose, who died in 2020.

Tijuana is the 27th stakes-winner worldwide for Coolmore’s Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and is his third in Australia joining Head of State and Pretty Amazing.
