Pierro Stayer Wins Canberra Cup

Tara Madgwick - Monday March 14

Having just his second run back from a spell after contesting the Group I ATC Sydney Cup last year, quality Pierro stayer Sacramento showed his class to win the $200,000 Listed Canberra Cup (2000m) on Monday.

Sacramento is now a three time stakes-winner, the Canberra Cup adding to wins in the VRC St Leger and Parramatta Cup - image Steve Hart.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Sacramento went forward from a wide gate for Tim Clark and was never seriously challenged to carry his 58.5kg to a dominant length and a half win.

Stable representative Neil Paine was thrilled with the win and surrounded by a sea of very happy owners, some of whom live in Canberra making it all the more cause for celebration.

“Brilliant ride from Tim, what a win! ”said Paine.

“I’m so pleased for the horse, he’s such a trier.”

A $160,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft for Paul Moroney Bloodstock, Sacramento is now a three time stakes-winner and has the overall record of seven wins and five placings from 22 starts with prizemoney in excess of $556,000.

He was bred by highly successful Victorian breeder Robert Crabtree and is the second foal and first winner for Group III winning Redoute’s Choice mare Alzora, who was effective up to 2000 metres.

Alzora had a filly by Impending last spring and as then covered again by the Group I winning son of Lonhro.
