One to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 19

The powerful Chris Waller stable had an impressive first starter by Savabeel at Newcastle on Wednesday bred on the magic cross!

Three year-old gelding Paternal was ridden quietly early by Jeff Penza, but zoomed through the field and hit the line full of running to win the 1400m maiden by half a head.

A $280,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from the Waikato Stud draft for Hiwi Lodge, Paternal runs for Orbis Bloodstock and is the second winner from O’Dianne, a winning O’Reilly daughter of Group III winning Pins mare Breezy.

Paternal as a yearling.

23 stakes-winners are bred on the Savabeel x O’Reilly cross headed by current season Group I winners Mo’Unga and The Perfect Pink and Group II winning 3YO’s Blue Army and Forgot You. The nick runs at 14% stakes-winners to runners.
