Rebel Dane filly Fireburn is looking much more than an offseason two-year-old.
After breaking her maiden at Randwick on December 12, the Gary Portelli-trained filly made it two on the trot when coming with a barnstorming finish under Tyler Schiller to defeat a competitive field of juveniles in the Ranvet Handicap (1150m) at Randwick-Kensington on New Year's Day.
Settled midfield, Fireburn launched late down the centre of the track to defeat the Russian Revolution filly Revolutionary Miss by a short neck with the Not A Single Doubt filly Pantonario a short head back in third.
Portelli said he Fireburn is close to his heart.
&
t;It's like a proud father situation right now. Having Rebel Dane, the sire of such a promising young filly," the Warwick farm-based trainer said.
"She has a lot of dad in her. I remember that he would win by a head on so many occasions, like in the Manikato and Sir Rupert Clarke. He knew where the line was.
"I had a gut feeling at the 200m when she had a couple to run down that she was going to do it. She applies herself and what a beautiful filly she will be.
"She will settle wherever you want, and when asked to for more, there is plenty there. She has a massive stride, and I can't wait to get her over a bit further later on.
"I was a little concerned in dropping back to 1150m after winning over 1200m, and I thought she was looking for 1400m that day.
"She worked so well on Tuesday morning that I Came here pretty confident. We had to wait to see if the track played leaderish, but she has come four or five (lengths) off them and got the job done.
