Smart HK Winners for Outreach and Star Witness

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 28

Widden Stud sires Outreach and Star Witness both had smart winners at the Sha Tin meeting on Monday with four year-old Carroll Street making it four wins from eight starts, while three year-old Galaxy Witness was a winner on debut.

Trained by Douglas Whyte and ridden by Blake Shinn, Carroll Street again showed his liking for the straight 1000m to win by half a length with all four of his wins to date coming over this trip at this track.

A speedy son of Outreach, Carroll Street was a modest $32,000 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale purchase from the Widden Stud draft for John Foote Bloodstock.

Bred by Widden Stud, he is the first  foal from Manhattan Rain mare Brooklyn Rain, a grand-daughter of blue blood Hanky Panky, who comes from the Singles Bar branch of the
Easy Date family that has produced Group I winners King’s Legacy, Oohood and champion sire Not a Single Doubt.

Brooklyn Rain has a yearling colt by Your Song that will be offered by Widden Stud as Lot 437 at Inglis Classic and foaled a filly by Supido in October.

Caspar Fownes and Joao Moreira combined to win with Galaxy Witness, whose ability was no secret to punters, who sent him to the post as a warm favourite for his debut.

He took the 1000m Class Four event by the best part of a length and will be winning more races.

“He’s a progressive, nice horse,” Fownes said. “It’s tough to win first-up in Hong Kong and he did it nicely.”

A $160,000 Magic Millions purchase for John Foote Bloodstock from the Edinglassie Thoroughbreds draft, Galaxy Witness is a half-brother to stakes-winner Niedorp and is the third winner from unraced Lonhro mare Black Tulip, a half-sister to Group II winner Hanks.
