Magic Millions Contenders for Capitalist

Tara Madgwick - Saturday December 4

Newgate Farm’s Capitalist was quickly into stride on Saturday with exciting two year-old colt Capital Tower staking his claim for the $2million Magic Millions Classic at Doomben, while progressive three year-old filly Shihonka also booked her ticket north with a victory at Rosehill.

Champion Queensland trainer Tony Gollan looks to have a great chance in the rich Magic Millions 2YO with exciting colt Capital Tower making it two wins in as many starts with a commanding victory in the $105,000 open juvenile event over 1200m.

Capital Tower was allowed to find his feet by James Orman, but when angled into the clear after turning for home he unleashed a powerful finish to zoom past his rivals and win by nearly two lengths.

Capital Tower was a $600,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Vinery Stud draft for John Foote Bloodstock and has already banked $81,700 in prizemoney.

Bred by Brian and Noela Backshall’s John Stuart Investments, Capital Tower is the first foal of Eiffel Tower a half-sister by Stratum to stakes-winner Sangria out of the blue blood stakes-placed Encosta de Lago mare Quench The Thirst.

John Stuart Investments purchased Eiffel Tower for $200,000 from the Newgate Consignment at the 2019 MM National Broodmare Sale when carrying Capital Tower.

Her dam Quench the Thirst is one of four daughters of Redoute’s Choice’s sister Monsoon Wedding to make $1million more at the Teleey Asset Dispersal. She was knocked down to Newgate Farm for $1.5million.

Eiffel Tower has missed the past two seasons to Russian Revolution, but maybe it will be third time lucky as she was covered again by him in early September.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Shihonka was the only here year-old filly taking on the older mares in the Benchmark 78 event over 1350m and she rose to the challenge scoring a head win with Tim Clark in the saddle as favourite.

She led and gave plenty under pressure to take her overall record to three wins and two placings from six starts with prizemoney topping $160,000.

"It was her first time at the distance and she was there to be beaten but she stuck on very well and kept finding," Bott said.

"There is still improvement to come from her and with that in mind, and as we are getting her ready for the Magic Millions (Guineas), she will need another run.

"We have options in Sydney or up north so we will weigh all that up.

"She has done a great job today. She keeps improving every time she steps out and is a lovely filly."

Shihonka as a yearling.

A $220,000 Magic Millions purchase for her trainers from the Yarraman Park draft, Shihonka was a successful pinhook having been bought by Mitchell Bloodstock for $120,000 from the Newgate Consignment at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.

Bred by SF Bloodstock, Shihonka is the first living foal from Group III placed Real Saga mare Stroak, who was on-sold by Newgate at the 2019 Magic Million Broodmare Sale to Aston Bloodstock for $100,000.
