First Season Sires Impress at Tattersalls Foal Sale

The 2021 Tattersalls December Foal Sale this week featured the progeny of several shuttle sires with their first progeny being born here in Australia this year with notable success for sires such as Too Darn Hot (GB), Blue Point (IRE), Magna Grecia (IRE) and Calyx (GB).

Too Darn Hot
Darley’s Too Darn Hot was the leading first season sire by average at this sale with 10 foals selling at an average 114,200 guineas.

Too Darn Hot filly from Astonishing

He had three foals sell for 100,000 guineas or more with his best results a filly from stakes-winning Galileo mare Astonishing that sold for 270,000 guineas to Stroud Coleman Bloodstock, while a colt from another stakes-winning Galileo mare  Dazzling was snapped up by Godolphin for 250,000 guineas.

Too Darn Hot colt from Dazzling

A Champion 2YO and dual Group I winner at three, Too Darn Hot has been very popular with Australian breeder and the son of Dubawi stands at a fee of $44,000, which is the same as he was last year.

Also standing at Darley, champion sprinter Blue Point made his presence felt as the second best first season sire by average with 11 foals selling at an average 92,455 guineas.

Blue Point had four foals sell for 100,000 guineas or more and produced the single best result for a first season sire when his filly from stakes-winning Sir Percy mare Indigo Lady sold for 300,000 guineas.

The half-sister to Group II winner Indie Angel was bought by Blandford Bloodstock.

A four time Group I winning son of Shamardal, Blue Point is also priced at $44,000 as he was last year.

Coolmore’s Magna Grecia also made his mark with 14 foals selling for 61,847 guineas and three that sold for 100,000 guineas or more.



His best result was a colt from stakes-winning Azamour mare Twitch that was bought by Jamie McCalmont Bloodstock for 210,000 guineas.

His top selling filly from winning Fastnet Rock mare She’s So Flawless sold for 110,000 guineas to Arthur Hoyeau as agent.

A Group I winner at two and three by Invincible Spirit, Magna Grecia stands at a fee of $19,250 down from a fee of $22,000 last year.

Also from Coolmore, Kingman’s Group II winning son Calyx had 10 foals average 36,200 guineas with three selling for 50,000 guineas or more.

His best result was a colt from Dazzling Rose that sold for 65,000 guineas to Hazelwood Bloodstock and comes from the family of Champion 3YO Almanzor.

The first son of Kingman to retire to stud, Calyx stands at a fee of $13,750 down from $17,600 last year.
