Crystal Bound for the Top

Mark Smith - Saturday September 11

For a long way down the Flemington straight, it seemed that undefeated filly Dosh had made the perfect return to racing in Saturday's Listed Cap D'Antibes Stakes (1100m), but as she began to weaken, two daughters of Not A Single Doubt were ready to pounce.

The Group II Percy Sykes Stakes runner-up Crystal Bound found enough under Jye McNeil to Flying Evelyn by a head with the Rich Enuff filly Dosh a length back in third.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Crystal Bound won on debut at Moonee Valley in March before running the top-class Headwater filly Jamaea to a neck in the $1million Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick in April.

"She's a very high-quality filly," Maher said.

"She's got that beautiful big action. We took her to The Valley off one trial, and she was very impressive first time out.

"So we took a similar path this time around. She's still a bit wintry in the coat, and that will really bring her on. That's probably why she probably doesn't look as refined as when they've been in work a bit longer.

"Jye, I just didn't give any instructions. I said to let her be where she's comfortable, wherever that may be.

"He obviously knows her well, and he was pretty confident."

A $400,000 purchase by Ciaron Maher Racing out of the Noorilim Park draft at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Crystal Bound is the best of two winners from four to race out of the winning Zabeel mare Crystalised.

Crystal Bound a $400,000 Magic Millions yearling

A 1.3million Easter Yearling, Crystalised is a half-sister to Group 1 SAJC South Australian Derby and Group1 Schweppes Oaks winner Zarita (Pentire), the Group II winner Run Like The Wind (Pins) and the outstanding Hong Kong performer Joy And Fun (Cullen).

Crystalised has a yearling filly by Impending and slipped to The Autumn Sun last year.

Crystal Bound becomes the 77th stakes-winner for Arrowfield Stud’s pensioned No a Single Doubt.
