Exceed and Excel Delivers Debut Winner for The Queen

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 16

Promising Exceed and Excel two year-old filly Intelligentsia made a winning debut overnight at Newbury carrying the colours of Her Majesty The Queen.

Trained by Richard Hughes and ridden by Pat Dobbs, the speedy chestnut led all the way and won the six furlong juvenile maiden by a neck.

Intelligentsia - Newbury Racecourse Twitter

“Intelligentsia is smart and we might look at something like the Dick Poole at Salisbury, but I don't want to rush her back. She could get away with five furlongs, but I don't want to drop back to that in case there's a chance she could get seven,” said Richard Hughes.

Intelligentsia was bred by Godolphin and is a half-sister to Group III winner Ideal Beauty from stakes-winning Elusive Quality mare Discernable.

Intelligentsia wasn’t the only winner on Friday for The Queen, whose homebred Deep Impact filly Portfolio scored a stylish win over 1m3f at Newmarket.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Portfolio has two wins from six starts, those victories coming at her last two outings so she is clearly on the improve.

Porfolio is the first winner from stakes-winning Dubawi mare Diploma, who was also bred and raced by The Queen.
