Leading Sires for Hong Kong 2020/2021

Tara Madgwick - Friday July 16

The Hong Kong market is an important one for Australasian breeders, so it’s well worth a look at the leading sires for the 2020/2021 HK racing season that concluded with a Happy Valley meeting on Wednesday.

Aussie bred Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty was the largest contributer to the success of his sire, the former Darley shuttler Medaglia D’Oro (USA), who heads the leading sires list for Hong Kong earnings.

Darley’s perennial favourite Exceed and Excel is a consistent source of high class HK performers and had a great season with his 13 winners headed by two stakes-winners, Group I HK Classic Mile winner Excellent Proposal and Group III National Day Cup winner Computer Patch.

Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto (USA) was the leading sire by winners racking up 17 from 28 runners with his progeny proving affordable and well suited to the HK environment.

The sire of brilliant sprinter Lost and Running, who has secured a slot for the 2021 Everest, Per Incanto had a weanling colt sell as part of the Shadwell Dispersal at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $500,000, so his stocks would appear to be on the rise.

By champion sire Street Cry, Per Incanto stands at a fee of $25,000 this spring.

Newgate Farm’s Deep Field has consolidated on the promise he showed in Hong Kong last season, finishing this year with 10 winners of 20 races from 24 runners headed by Group III The Premier Cup winner Sky Field.

The second most expensive yearling by Deep Field sold in 2021 was a colt from Bousquet that was bought at Inglis Premier by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for $550,000.

Deep Field is a HK favourite.

Deep Field stands at a fee of $88,000 this spring.
