Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 18

The most expensive yearling filly by Nicconi broke the ice for her first win at Newcastle on Tuesday in the Star Thoroughbreds colours.

Second at her first two starts at Newcastle and Warwick Farm, the Chris Waller trained Sur La Mer was a hot favourite for the 1250m maiden and was dominant to the line powering clear to win by a length and three-quarters.

Sur La Mer was a $300,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Star Thoroughbreds / Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) from the Woodside Park draft and is the third winner from three foals to race from Stratum mare Clearwater Bay.

At $300,000, Sur La Mer is the most expensive yearling filly by Nicconi.

Sur La Mer is importantly a full sister to Group I MRC Blue Diamond runner up Lankan Star, who was recently sold at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale for $710,000, so if she too can gain Black Type as her career unfolds she will more than hold her value.

Clearwater Bay produced a colt by Nicconi last spring and is now in foal to Yes Yes Yes.

Nicconi stands at Widden Stud Victoria this spring at a fee of $27,500.
