A savvy $15,000 investment at the 2018 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for Slade Bloodstock paid handsome dividends in Adelaide on Saturday when progressive Shamus Award filly Mimi’s Award captured the Group III SAJC TAB SA Fillies Classic (2500m).
Prepared by the team at Lindsay Park, Mimi’s Award has been flying under the radar contesting modest races in country Victoria this preparation, but a seven length victory at Wangaratta on April 29 encouraged connections to up the ante.
Well supported in the big field of 16, Mimi’s Award came with a powerful late run under Daniel Stackhouse to score a three quarter length win taking her overall record to three wins and three seconds from six starts with prizemoney topping $130,000.
"Her win in the benchmark 58 was quite impressive the other day at Wangaratta and it was great to see it do it today and it was a great ride from Daniel Stackhouse," said co-trainer Ben Hayes, who has the filly entered for both the Queensland Oaks and Derby.
"They really rolled along and she had to make a really long sustained run and she held it right to the line and that’s what impressed me the most."
Mimi’s Award carries the colours of Slade Bloodstock and runs for a large group of owners, who will no doubt be thrilled with their investment given she was bought by Rob Slade for just $15,000 as a Magic Millions weanling from the Newgate Farm draft.
Bred by Love Racing, she is the first foal from Aunt Mimi, an unraced More Than Ready (USA) daughter of stakes-winner Strawberry Field.
Aunt Mimi was on-sold in 2018 and bought by Kingstar Farm for $45,000 from the Newgate draft at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale. She has a yearling colt by Flying Artie, a weanling filly by Menari and is back in foal to Flying Artie.
Mimi’s Award is the 14th stakes-winner for Rosemont Stud’s Shamus Award and is his ninth this season. The Cox Plate winning son of Snitzel stands at a fee of $33,000 this spring.
