$370,000 Spirit of Boom Colt Tops MM Gold Coast March Day 1

Media Release - Monday March 15

A colt by Spirit of Boom topped the day as figures soared across the board on Day One of the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

Leading local trainer John Morrisey went to $370,000 to secure Lot 69, the Spirit of Boom colt from Chroma who was offered by River Junction.

"He's a really lovely colt," Morrisey said moments after the sale. "He's a good mover and I'm very happy to get him."

"He's a great type and he's got a good pedigree as well and I had to go hard to beat Tony Gollan to get him," Morrisey added.

Two lots earlier Morrisey went to $170,000 to secure Kenmore Lodge's Spirit of Boom filly from Chit Chat.

Joe Heather, of River Junction who bred and sold the colt, was delighted with the price for the colt.

"He's a really good colt," Heather said. "It's a great result for a small Queensland farm to top Day One of the sale."

"The colt's going to a fantastic home and he will have every chance to achieve great things on the track."

"There's a great depth to the buying bench at the sale and that certainly helped with the result today," Heather added.

The top selling filly on the day was Daandine Stud's Sebring youngster from Danehill Smile's two-year-old Melbourne winning daughter Go Again. She was purchased by Edmonds Racing and Kestrel Thoroughbreds for $240,000.

"We fell in love with her leading into the January sale and we've had to wait a bit longer but we're delighted to get her," Kestrel Thoroughbreds' Bruce Slade said.

"She's got great natural strength and is a really sweet mover. She will get up and go early and train on as a three-year-old."

Across the day over $7.5 million was traded on 160 lots sold at an average of $47,156 and an impressive clearance rate of 84%. The gross is up 110% on last year's Day One - the median 75% up and the average rose 62%.

"Clearly it would be unfair to compare to last year's sale given the circumstances we were dealt on the eve of that sale," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"Today's sale was a fantastic confidence booster for the Queensland industry and justifiably because of the prizemoney and bonuses these horses will race for."

"We've had a great spread of buyers from top to bottom and obviously all our key numbers are pleasing," Bowditch added.
