Long-time leader Snitzel lost his place at the top of the Champion Sire title last week after Winx captured the Queen Elizabeth Stakes but with the great daughter of Street Cry (Ire) putting her hooves up for winter, Snitzel has wasted little time eating into Street Cry's $600,000 lead.
Snitzel's admirably consistent son Redzel earned a well-deserved victory in Saturday's $150,000 Group III TAB Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden, the Triple Crown colour-bearer was in uncharted waters when holding the lead 100 metres from home.
Though he failed to win
"It's a trip he hadn't been great at before and had a couple of goes without earning a placing but he had conditions to suit today off the back of a nice second in the Galaxy and was able to dictate it today," McEvoy said.
The 4yo gelding advances his overall record to 6 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third from 16 starts with earnings of $738,450.
"There's no better thing for a horse's confidence than winning and he's doing that well now," Peter Snowden said.
"He's about 60 to 70kg heavier than he used to be as a three-year-old.
"He's really developed now."
The son of Snitzel may have earned a trip to Brisbane for the winter.
