Stakes-Winners Set the Pace

Tara Madgwick - Monday October 10
If stakes-winners are the measure of a top class stallion, this one has hit the ground running in our new season of racing.

Darley's champion sire Exceed and Excel has made a flying start to the new season posting eight Australian stakes-winners since August 1 and a new stakes-winner in Ireland overnight with a victory in the Listed Curragh Testimonial Stakes for Shanghai Glory.

Exceed and ExcelA three year-old gelding trained by Charles Hills and ridden by William Buick, Shanghai Glory had been running well in the handicaps and stepped it up a notch to win this Black Type sprint over six furlongs by a length.

With four wins from 12 starts, Shanghai Glory becomes the 167thstakes-winner for Exceed and Excel and is a half-brother to stakes-winner Choose Me from the good producer Hecuba.

At age 16, Exceed and Excel is going great guns with his eight Australian stakes-winners this season including three juvenile stakes-winners Khan, Jorda and Madeenaty who have given him an early lead on the Australian 2YO Sires List by earnings.

The Champion 2YO Sire twice previously in 2013 and 2015, Exceed and Excel is an early favourite to take the honours again for the current season.

Exceed and Excel stands at a fee of $110,000 this season.
