Better Than Ready's Alpine Edge Remains Unbeaten

Mark Smith - Saturday December 26

Hard to do much better than two starts for two stakes wins.

Alpine Edge will head to the Gold Coast with a favourites chance in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic after the son of Better Than Ready scored a fighting win in Saturday's Group III Magic Millions BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

Ridden by Robbie Fradd for Toby and Trent Edmonds, Alpine Edge overpowered the Press Statement colt Baby Wong to win by a half-length with the Rebel Dane colt Subterranean two and a quarter lengths back in third.

The disappointment was the Breeders' Plate winner Shaquero who folded tamely in the closing stages to beat just one runner home.

The Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) winner at Eagle Farm when on debut, Alpine Edge advances his record to two from two with earnings of $227,500.

"He has shown above average ability from the first time we stepped on him," Toby Edmonds said.

"We were keen to ride him quietly as he drew a sticky barrier. It did not look good early, but he got into a good spot and was strong late.
"He is very laid back like most good horses. He goes out and does his work – he is very easy to train, which makes life a lot easier.

"(Yarramalong Parks) Richard Foster bred him and stayed in him. We have supported the farm for the past couple of seasons, so it is great to get a nice Group III winner for him."

Alpine Edge was a $160,000 Gold Coast yearling

Purchased by Edmonds Racing/Kestral Thoroughbreds/Lucky Clover for $160,000 out of the Yarramalong Park draft from Book 2 of the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Alpine Edge was the most expensive yearling by his sire sold at public auction in 2020.

He is the second winner from three to race out of the stakes-placed Freeze mare Freezethemillions who was purchased for just $5,000 at the 2013 QTIS Yearling Sale.

Freezethemillions hails from the family of champion racehorse and sire Zeditave. She has a yearling colt by Deep Field, which will be in the  Yarramalong Park draft heading to the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and foaled a full-brother to Alpine Edge on September 10.
