A Deep Impact Double for Arrowfield at Newcastle

Mark Smith - Tuesday September 1

You could be excused for believing the results are from Tokyo, but no it’s a running double for the great Deep Impact at Broadmeadow with the progeny of two of the greatest mares to ever grace the paddocks of Arrowfield Stud.

Deep Impact has had three Australian winners this week!

On Sunday we reported on the maiden win of the Deep Impact mare Miss Japan (JPN) at Wyong and now the mare that accompanied Miss Japan and her mother Miss World (USA) on the flight back to Australia, the 5-time Group 1 winner Miss Finland, is the dam of the Chris Waller-trained 3yo colt Bucharest, who kept his record at two for two with a fighting win over 1400m.

That came forty minutes after the 4yo Deep Impact mare Reaching opened her winning account in a 1500m maiden.

carrying the colours of Arrowfield Stud, the Kim Waugh-trained mare is the sixth and final foal of the 4-time Group 1 winner Alinghi (Encosta de Lago).

Odds-on favourite Bucharest was made to work to keep his unbeaten record intact.

Made a Breednet One To Watch after making a winning debut over 1500m at Newcastle on August 13, the 3yo son of Deep Impact travelled sweetly in the run behind the pacesetting Highmaster.

James McDonald elected to stick to the fence on the favourite who found a willing foe in Highmaster (Poet’s Voice) who only conceded in the final 75 metres to go down by half a length with Land Ahoy (Dundeel) a further one and a quarter lengths back in third.

Bred and retained to race by Arrowfield and partners, Bucharest is a half-brother to Group I MRC One Thousand Guineas winner Stay With Me (Street Cry) and stakes-placegetters Earth Angel (Animal Kingdom) and Woodbine (Hussonet) being the sixth winner from six foals to race from Redoute’s Choice’s champion daughter Miss Finland who has a 2yo colt by Shalaa (IRE) and was covered by Dundeel last spring.

Bred and raced in similar interests to Bucharest, Reaching didn’t help her cause by missing the start by a length.

James McDonald hunted up to a midfield spot on the rail and was able to extricate the mare to open air in the straight for a hard-fought half-neck win over the 3yo Vancouver filly Canadian Spice with the Pierro colt Bob a further three-quarters of a length back in third.

Reaching broke through for her first win having placed in four of her previous five starts.

She is the final foal of Alinghi whose stud career was largely one of disappointment however she has five daughters to build on her legacy.
