Randwick Bloodstock currently has a BIG problem . On the 1st of September, the stallion barns across Australia and New Zealand kick into gear. The problem for Randwick Bloodstock’s principal Brett Howard is that he still has dozens and dozens of stallion nominations which he has to try and sell before the breeding season gets underway.
“The inquiry level and nomination sales have been ticking along OK, however, not as well as I thought they would be,” commented Howard.
“The market is definitely down, so I naturally expected there would be a lot more people shopping around this year looking for some good deals on their stallion nominations.”
Most Australian and New Zealand broodmare owner’s class themselves as “commercial breeders”, which means they are breeding stock to make a profit. When endeavouring to make a profit it is important to keep your production costs under control. The biggest individual annual cost is usually the stallion nomination. Logically it would therefore be prudent to either look for stallions which represent value in the current market and/or to seek out deals which can help to lower your production costs.
If you are not working hard at doing either, you are not giving yourself the best possible chance of making a profit.
None of the nominations listed for sale on the website are owned by the studs which stand the stallion. The vendors are people who have annual access to a stallion, namely the stallion’s shareholders and breeding rights holders. Every year a number of these people find themselves in a position where they are unable to utilise that season’s annual nomination, so they list them for sale with Randwick Bloodstock.
Some of these vendors will take the view a small return on the nomination is better than watching it sit idle and generate a zero return. Buyers have been able to save themselves as much as $15,000 on a nomination, while most buyers will rarely fail to save between $1,000 to $5,000. If you could save yourself a minimum of $1,000 just by sending an email or two and/or making a few phone calls, you would do it every time.
Apart from saving money, a buyer may also be able to negotiate favourable payment terms and conditions.
For example, most of the vendors are happy to sell their nominations with payment on a Live Foal.
It is important for buyers to remember these stallion nominations are negotiable instruments and they are welcome to offer whatever price, payment terms and conditions they require. Obviously, a seller needs to agree, however, with some negotiation, a deal can usually be struck.
The Stallion Nomination Centre page can be viewed on Randwick Bloodstock’s website.
