Queen’s Toronado Colt Wins G2 July Stakes

Tara Madgwick - Thursday July 9

An easy winner at Royal Ascot of the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes last month, Toronado colt Tactical took another step forward when carrying the colours of The Queen to victory in the Group II July Stakes (6f) at Newmarket overnight.

Making his first appearance since Royal Ascot the Andrew Balding trained colt relished the extra furlong to score a length and a quarter win, his second from three starts and appears to be moving towards Group I company.

“The Prix Morny (Deauville G1) is the plan I'd hope very much,” said Andrew Balding.

“Tactical has shown he is versatile on any ground, which is always nice to know before you go travelling, that you have a horse that can cope with a variety of ground and he obviously coped with the six furlongs well today.

“It is really fantastic for us to have a horse as good as this for Her Majesty. I'm sure there will be some very good horses that haven't even raced yet and we still have a way to go, but he is near the top of the tree at the moment.”

Tactical is the first winner for stakes-placed Makfi mare Make Fast, a daughter of Group III winner Raymi Coya.

Toronado is enjoying a great season in Australia with more than 50 winners of over $3million in prizemoney.

A champion miler by High Chaparral, Toronado shuttles to Swettenham Stud in Victoria and stands this spring at a fee of $27,500.
