If a horse can be judged by the company they keep then Sharnee Rose would be dining with kings and queens even before she broke her maiden at her 14th start.
Consider some of the horseflesh she ran into along the way.
At her career debut over 1000 metres at Caulfield, she had to settle for second behind a Fastnet Rock filly named Mosheen who at her next start defeated all bar the champion Sepoy in the Golden Slipper.
Of course, Mosheen would go on to be a 4-time Group 1 winner.
At her second start at Sale, Sharnee Rose had to play second fiddle to the Stratum gelding Unpretentious who would later win a pair of stakes races including the Group II MRC Schillaci Stakes.
At her third, fourth and fifth starts, Sharnee Rose would place behind Atlantic Jewel. The last of that treble was the Group 1 MRC One Thousand Guineas, one of four wins at the highest level for Fastnet Rock’s masterpiece.
So, there would have been much rejoicing when Kerrin McEvoy guided Sharnee Rose to a 4-length victory in a Bendigo maiden over 1400 metres on October 31, 2012.
Following a spell, the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained filly won again two starts later at Caulfield defeating two stakes-winning fillies in Elite Elle and Placelet but after finishing fourth at Flemington she had new owners, Australian Bloodstock, and was on the way to the Newcastle stables of Kris Lees.
It was no instant success storey.
The daughter of Nadeem took six starts to win for her new owners but it came in the Group III ATC Golden Pendant at Rosehill at the expense of the dual Group 1 winner Red Tracer.
Sharnee Rose added a second Group III at her next start in the Group III ATC Angst Quality Handicap at Randwick.
That was a big day for the Australian Bloodstock team as they were on a high from the unbelievable win of the gifted German import Salon Soldier at his Australian debut.
Sharnee Rose rounded out her spring campaign with a meritorious fourth in the Group 1 Myer Classic at Flemington won by Red Tracer from Catkins.
The following autumn it was the $2 million earner Catkins that would prove the nemesis of Sharnee Rose in the Group III Wiggle Stakes at Warwick Farm and the Group II Emancipation Stakes at Rosehill, which was Sharnee Rose’s swansong.
Purchased by Barrie and Midge Griffiths’ Northwood Park out of the Yarraman Park draft at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Sharnee Rose retired with a record of 4 wins, 9 seconds and 3 thirds from 29 starts with earnings of $567,450.
Bred by Shadwell Stud, Sharnee Rose came from the first crop of Redoute’s Choice’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Nadeem.
A half-sister to the stakes-placed Zaafan she comes from one of Shadwell’s most successful families in Australia.
Her dam Farasha (Jeune) is a sister to the stakes-placed Alharir who is the dam of the Group 1 Kenilworth Cape Derby winner Ertijaal (Hard Spun) as well as Mushreq who was a Group II winner in Dubai and was Group 1 placed in South Africa.
Farasha’s half-sister Nasmah (At Talaq) is the dam of the Group 1 MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Rewaaya (Singspiel) and is the granddam of Group 1 BRC Doomben Cup winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense).
This is the famous sire producing family of Snippets and Not A Single Doubt.
In her first three seasons at stud, Sharnee Rose was covered by Dundeel, the only horse to lower the colours of Atlantic Jewel.
The first two have not yielded any great dividends to date but we will be hoping it’s third time lucky for the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained filly Miss Guggenheim who makes her career debut in Saturday’s Group III National Stakes at Morphettville.
Miss Guggenheim was knocked down to Adam Brandwood for $510,000 out of the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2019 Australian Easter Yearling Sale and Arrowfield has retained an interest.
That made Miss Guggenheim the second most expensive Dundeel at the sale and she is also the second most expensive yearling to contest the National Stakes on Saturday.
Another Arrowfield Easter Yearling graduate on debut is the $1.7 million Deep Impact colt Kazuhiko who is out of Microphone's half-sister Grito (Redoute's Choice).
Should be a fascinating race.
