Trained by Chris Waller, Hinchinbrook colt Sauvestre cut an imposing figure in the mounting yard and duly ran up to his good looks with the benefit of two trials to have hi mentally ready for the task at hand.
He enjoyed a perfect run from an inside gate just behind the leader and when asked for an effort from Brenton Avdulla unleasehd a powerful finish.
Sauvestre chased race favourite Iveigle hard to the line and got the better of him in the last stride to win the 1200 metre maiden by a head with a long margin back to the third horse.
“Fantastic win. He’s always shown plenty of promise, but has just taken time to come to hand,” said stable representative Charlie Duckworth.
“The JJ Atkins (Group I ,1600m Brisbane June 6) is still on so that’s a race that could be targeted by a colt like this.”
Bred and offered for sale by Cressfield, Sauvestre is a half-brother to Group III place The Chairman and this season’s very good three year-old filly Nimalee, a four time metro winner by So You Think.
He is the fourth winner from four foals to race from unraced Dezign, a half-sister by Zabeel to Group III winner Star Fashion from Group II winner and HK Derby heroine Elegant Fashion
Dezign has a weanling colt by So You Think and was covered last year by The Autumn Sun.
