Adelaide MM Sale Concludes

Media Release - Wednesday March 11

Colts by Nicconi and Zoustar shared top honours on Day Two of the 2020 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale when selling for $140,000 at Morphettville today.

Traders looking for athletic prospects for the 2YO sales later this year continued their buying spree at the sale with the top two sellers today being snapped up by Breeze Up Bloodstock.

The first of the top sellers came when the team from Breeze Up Bloodstock went to $140,000 to secure Lot 324 - the Zoustar colt from I'm a Flying Star.

Presented by Leneva Park Thoroughbreds, the colt is the first foal of an Adelaide and Melbourne winning Starcraft mare who hails from the family of Magic Millions flagbearer Snippets as well as Not a Single Doubt, Oohood and this season's 2YO group winner King's Legacy.

$140,000 Nicconi colt from Life's ZerpriseLater in the afternoon a colt by Nicconi (Lot 364) was also snapped up by Breeze Up Bloodstock when presented by loyal sale supporter Balcrest Stud.

The colt is the first foal of the two time winning and city performed Choisir mare Life's Zerprise and is from a strong winning South Australian family.

Li'l Konta and Cashed's half brother presented by Golden Grove was next on the top selling leaderboard when knocked down to Australian Bloodstock for $135,000.

The Shamus Award colt, catalogued as Lot 362, is the latest yearling from the former top speedster Li'l Cashy - now a grand producing daughter of Keltrice.

Macdonald Gluyas Racing went to $120,000 to secure Tequila Time and Inner Warrior's half sister by Palentino - the top priced filly on Day Two.

She was presented by the Satchell family's Willow Grove Stud - another strong and loyal supporter of the Adelaide Yearling Sale.

"Overall it was a bit of a sticky market," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "But to have a clearance of almost 80 per cent is particularly healthy in the current climate and we were delighted to see the strong sales continue right through to Book Two."

"Buyers came here and knew what they wanted to buy. The horses had to pass their criteria to bid - and in those cases they bid strongly."

"There's been great participation at the sale from traders. I think the colt market here for clean horses was particularly strong. It shows that if you bring the right horse to Adelaide you can get really good money."

"The buying bench here over the past couple of days has been the best seen in Adelaide for many years and the vendors showed their appreciation," Bowditch added.

Book One leading buyer was McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock Agency who spent $435,000 on six individual lots.

The leading vendor on gross was Baramul Stud ($925,000 for 24 sold) and the leading vendor by average (two or more lots sold) was shared by Squillani Park Thoroughbreds (4 sold) and Golden Grove (2 sold) at $87,500.

Tasmania's Armidale Stud had another successful venture to Adelaide - selling all seven of their draft for a gross of $585,000 and average of $83,571.

Later in the day the Book Two component of the sale saw increases across the board with an average price of $19,468 for 79 lots sold at a gross of over $1.5 million.

The top price in Book Two was $90,000 for Lot 491 - the Puissance de Lune filly from Hughes My Daddy. Mitch Freedman was the successful buyer of the Phoenix Broodmare Farm consigned youngster.

The focus of the Australian bloodstock industry now switches north to Queensland with the 2020 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale to be staged next Monday and Tuesday.

“It’s a great sale for us,” Bowditch noted. “There’s plenty of opportunity at the Gold Coast March Yearling Sale – it’s a great catalogue so we encourage everyone to get amongst it.”
