New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales Series is heading South, showcasing 76 lots of the best Southern-bred product available at the 2020 South Island Sale, with the catalogue online now and arriving in letterboxes from mid-March.
Held at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch, the one-day session features a selection of yearlings offered on Friday 17 April from the later selling time of 12pm.
All yearlings purchased at this year’s South Island Sale are eligible to be nominated for the lucrative Karaka Million Series, which comprises of two $1 million races – the Karaka Million 2YO and the Karaka Million 3YO Classic, in addition to the $100,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup, which they can contest for the duration of their career.
Graduates of the Sale have laid claim to 18 stakes wins since the start of the 2016-2017 season, including five Group victories.
The 2020 edition of the Sale offers a number of siblings to stakes winners and progeny of stakes-winning dams, with quality Southern families on display and fillies with residual value catalogued.
Lot 1 is a grey filly by Reliable Man out of Listed-winning Iffraaj mare Lady Zafira (NZ).
Lot 13 is a Road to Rock filly closely related to multiple Group One winner and Champion Three-Year-Old in New Zealand Madison County (NZ) (Pins).
Lot 17 is by Ghilbellines out of Pernote and is a half-sister to Listed Tasmanian Derby winner Civil Disobedience (NZ) (Raise the Flag).
Lot 59 (Turn Me Loose) is a half-sister to 12-time-winning filly Sucre (NZ) (Ishiguru), including the Listed CJC Great Easter Stakes and has earnt NZ$243,215 in prizemoney.
Listed SAJC Hill Smith Stakes winner Savaheat (NZ) (Savabeel) is a half-sister to Lot 72, a Belardo filly out of Heat Storm.
Other highlights include Lot 46 by Highly Recommended, whose dam is a half-sister to Meleka Belle, the dam of New Zealand Horse of the Year and 10-time Group One winner Meldody Belle (NZ).
Lot 51 is a colt by Shocking out of All About the Coin. This Lots dam is a half-sister to multiple Group placed Messene who claimed 10 wins including seven in succession.
Lot 69 is a Belardo filly, whose dam (Facinate Me) is a half-sister to Group Two Wellington Guineas and NZB Southern Filly of the Year winner Emily Margaret (NZ).
There are a total of 21 vendors presenting drafts at the Sale this year, with progeny from a range of 27 sires including South Island-based stallions Raise the Flag, sire of current stakes winner Yogi (NZ). Currently standing at White Robe Lodge, he is represented by two colts.
There are ten progeny on offer by White Robe Lodge’s Ghibellines and 11 Lots by Zacinto, who currently stands at Valachi Downs.
