The Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Queen Kay defeated her better-fancied stablemate Smart 'N' Sexy in Saturday’s $125,000 Aquis Gold Pearl Quality at the Gold Coast, which was not just a blow to punters but looks to have cost the runner-up a spot in next week’s Magic Millions 2yo Classic.
A homebred for Emmanuel Bloodstock, Queen Kay was one of just two runners in the race not vying a place in next weeks $2 million showpiece.
The daughter of Zoustar was making her race debut and after smooth sailing early jockey Ryan Maloney found himself pocketed before finding a seam at the 200 metres to set out after her stablemate.
Queen Kay finished best to defeat Smart Missile’s daughter Smart 'n' Sexy by a short-head with Tony and Calvin McEvoy's well fancies Spirit Of Boom filly Bribery three-quarter of a length back in third, which will almost certainly mean she also will not have earned enough money to make the field next week.
“She’s very green and raw but it is a shame the other horse not winning because a win would have put her into next weeks race,” Toby Edmonds said.
“We are going to put blinkers on her (Smart 'n' Sexy) if she gets in next week.
“Ryan (Maloney) has been on Queen Kay in two barrier trials and has done a beautiful job with her. “The result is today she drew awkward and went back and didn’t fuss or stress but she had a checkered passage and still be able to win so it was a good effort.”
Queen Kay is the sixth live foal and the sixth winner out of the imported Fantasy Gal (USA) (In Excessive Bull) a stakes-placed 4-time winner from the family of Group 1 Golden Shaheen winner Reynaldothewizard.
Fantasy Gal (USA) has a yearling filly and a filly foal by Zoustar. She was covered last spring by Zoustar’s son Lean Mean Machine.
Zoustar has 32 lots catalogued for the Magic Millions.
