Nicks that Click – Making Magic

Tara Madgwick - Sunday December 29

A big Magic Millions mover for the 2YO Classic put the spotlight on a well-known nick over the weekend.

King's Legacy - image Magic MillionsWhen John Messara had the thought to bring an unknown US bred Chilean based stallion to Australia in Hussonet (USA), he no doubt hoped his progeny would ultimately mix well the dominant Danehill lines and in particular with the stock of Arrowfield’s established champion sire Redoute’s Choice… and so it has been.

The nick featured on Saturday when exciting colt King’s Legacy won the Group III BRC BJ McLachlan Stakes at his second start.

By Redoute’s Choice from Hussonet mare Breakfast in Bed, the colt cost $1.4million and is closely related to another of the big Arrowfield sires in Not a Single Doubt.

There have been 16 winners from 20 starters bred this way and six of them are stakes-winners (all Group winners) headed by dual Group I winning South African trained filly Majmu so the nick runs at 30% stakes-winners to runners.

Lot 354 Colt Redoute’s Choice x Gresset  - Bhima Thoroughbreds

Sons of Redoute’s Choice have also enjoyed great success with daughters of Hussonet, the nick producing 42 winners from 57 runners with seven stakes-winners headed by dual Group I winner Extreme Choice. The stakes-winner to runner strike rates is 12.2%.

Interestingly, Not a Single Doubt has the best record of all the Redoute’s Choice sons with Hussonet mares. There have been 10 winners from 15 runners bred this way and three stakes-winners with Extreme Choice the best and the strike rate of stakes-winners to runners coming in at 20%.
