Karaka Ready to Run Concludes

Media Release - Thursday November 21

Day 2 of selling at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2019 Ready to Run Sale of Two-Year-Olds saw 257 lots go under the hammer and NZB’s Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was pleased with the final outcome of the Sale.

“Whilst unhappy with the clearance rate at the end of Day 1, the significant improvement on the second day was very encouraging at 74%, up on last year’s 68%,” Seabrook said.

Top lot was the Shamus Award colt from Exchanges that sold for $550,000The aggregate reached $23,585,500 while the average was $91,722 and 16 lots were sold for a figure of $300,000 or more. The median remained on par with 2018 at $60,000 indicating a strong middle market.

Sam and Hana Beatson at Riversley Park were the leading vendor by aggregate with 31 lots sold for $6,267,500, including Lot 162 (Iffraaj x Saoirse) which achieved $500,000. This is the third consecutive year that their operation has claimed the leading vendor title by aggregate, this year also claiming the title by average.

The leading buyer by aggregate was Garry Carvell from Hiwi Lodge, who spent a total of $1,440,000 with purchases destined for Hong Kong, with buyers and their agents from the region active at the Sale.

Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis was the second leading buyer by aggregate, with a total spend of $1,372,500, while Waikato Stud’s Savabeel was the leading sire by both average and aggregate at the close of selling.

There was plenty of interest in Lot 375, the Shamus Award colt out of stakes-placed mare Exchanges, but it was Andrew Williams who came out on top.

The Sydney-based bloodstock agent went to $550,000 to secure the colt he highlighted as the pick of the Sale, fending off several underbidders which included Caulfield trainer Lloyd Kennewell.

“We thought it was the best breeze of the Sale and physically we thought he was the best horse of the Sale.

“He is a special horse to add to the programme.”

Hannah Kettlety from Woburn Farm was delighted with the outcome of their top Lot.

“He was our most popular horse by far, but we had no idea what he would make. We never dreamed he would make that much.”
