Everyone that purchases an expensive broodmare from a sale would love to have a result like this and the news just got better this week with the arrival of a prized filly foal from this acclaimed blue hen.
In 2016 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Coolmore Australia's well known Nominations & Sales Manager Colm Santry signed the docket at $570,000 for quality Encosta de Lago mare Pretty Penny on behalf of good clients and friends of 30 years Dr Denis and Claire O’Brien.
A few years earlier in 2008, Santry purchased Vegas Showgirl for $455,000 on behalf of John Camalleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds… and long story short, she is the dam of Winx!
While Pretty Penny is yet to produce a Winx, she has done more than enough to be afforded blue hen status.
A Group III placed daughter of champion sire Encosta de Lago, Pretty Penny was already established as a proven stakes producer and had done an amazing job for her previous owner Bill Cockram, but when you buy a 15 year-old mare does anyone really know what the future will hold?
Below is her produce record at the time of her purchase.
Below is how it looks now after the arrival of Group III winner Dollar for Dollar, Group I placed Rezealient and last Saturday’s Group II MRC Sandown Guineas winner Pretty Brazen, who was in utero when the mare was sold in 2016.
Pretty Brazen was sold for $700,000 at the 2018 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in the Coolmore draft, conveniently paying for her dam and her next two service fees at stud!
Pretty Penny is still going strong and has a lovely American Pharoah (USA) yearling filly and this week produced another filly by the Triple Crown hero, who is the leading first crop sire in North America with over 20 first crop winners including four stakes-winners.
“She’s one of those exceptional mares that produces a quality horse every time no matter what the sire,” said Colm Santry.
“She has a stunning yearling filly by American Pharoah that has been entered for Inglis Easter next year and will now be covered by Justify.”
