Dalasan Bounces Back in Carbine Club

Mark Smith - Saturday November 2

Moments after his star son Reliable Man (GB) sired the Wakeful Stakes winner Miami Bound, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and French Derby winner Dalakhani (IRE) chipped in with a winner of his own with the South Australian star Dalasan who was in for a big payday.

A beaten favourite in the Group III Caulfield Guineas Prelude and the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas -trained Dalasan bounced back to claim Saturday’s $500,000 Group II Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington and in the process earned his owners a $1,00,000 bonus.

Given a gun ride by Hugh Bowman, Dalasan pounced on the Burgundy colt Brandenburg inside the 200 metres to win  by a half-length with the $2.3 million Fastnet Rock colt Groundswell one and a quarter lengths back in third.

“We came in with high expectations and he settled a lot better,” Bowman said.

“Full credit to Leon and the team - coming back a step and preparing him for this race.”

Macdonald said Dalasan has not run a bad race.

"He's very good, I reckon," Macdonald said.

"Whether he's as good as Umrum and Gold Guru, I'm not sure, but he's up there.

"He's never missed stake money and he's won over all sorts of trips."

Part-owner and breeder Harry Perks said it was a huge thrill to win on one of the great days of Australian racing.

“To win a race like this on Derby day is really exciting and the people involved in the horse are over the moon,” he said.

“I brought the mare, who is by Kittens Joy the leading US Turf horse, for about $35,000 (at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale), which I thought was a bargain at the time and out jumps this wonderful horse.”

An $80,000 Inglis Premier purchase for his trainers from the Mill Park draft, Dalasan was bred by the SA based Toorak Thoroughbred Breeding Trust and is the second winner from stakes-placed Kitten's Joy (USA) mare Khandallah, whose dam La Rochelle (Honour And Glory) is a half-sister to Group winners Galic Boy and to the dams of Smokey Stover and Dreadnaught.

Mill Park sold a colt by Dissident from Khandallah at Inglis Premier this year for $110,000 and she foaled a filly by So You Think on September 2.

Dalasan is one of 53 stakes-winner worldwide for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and French Derby winner Dalakhani (IRE), who shuttled to Cornerstone Stud for three seasons.

He was retired from stud duties at his owner-breeder’s Haras de Bonneval at the age of 16 in 2016.
