Gun ride delivers Pariah in the San Domenico Stakes

Clinton Payne - Saturday August 26

Peter and Paul Snowden's top colt Pariah made the most from a 10 out of 10 ride to win the $150,000 Group III San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Starting from the outside gate in the field of nine, Pariah's jockey Blake Shinn had the three-year-old on the rail, tagging the midfield runners after 400m.

"As the race panned out I got more confident," Shinn said. "I was able to find the rail and got on the back of Jorda.

"I just had to extricate my way out at the turn."

From the turn the runs came as Shinn needed them, and he drove Pariah to the front nearing the 200m with the son of Redoute's Choice finding plenty in the run to the line.

"When the runs appeared I took them, at the top of the straight I was very confident,"Shinn said.

"I know he's got a great turn of foot and he delivered today."

Pariah ($2.10 fav) defeated Hawkes Racing's Chauffeur ($10) by a length with a neck back to the James Cummings-trained Jorda ($8.50).

"It was a very good ride wasn't it, but in fairness we had the horse to manoeuvre to do those things, to point him in the direction and just ride with him, it certainly was pretty to watch," Peter Snowden said.

Snowden said Pariah's first spring goal is the $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 23 before they reassess and look to other rich offerings.

"He'll run in the Run To The Rose and then obviously the Golden Rose," he said.

"The Golden Rose is his main target thus far, hopefully we can tick that box and then we can really think about what his future holds.

"After that 1400m run we'll determine what avenue we take with him, if we do press onto the mile or look at The Everest or freshen up for the Coolmore.

"They're certainly good things to be thinking about."

Pariah's win thrust the colt to the top of Golden Rose betting where he is now the $6.50 favourite at Sportsbet ahead of Menari at $7 while Chauffeur firmed into $15, slightly behind the Ming Dynasty Quality winner Addictive Nature at $13 with Jorda at $34.

If there was an unlucky runner in the San Domenico Stakes it was Jorda.

The filly was held up for a run on two separate occasions in the straight before getting out late and working home strongly to the line.

"Needed a run, couldn't find it but she hit the line well," Jorda's jockey Glyn Schofield said.
