Two colts by exciting young sire Deep Field set the sale ring alight at the Inglis Ready2 Racle Sale on Tuesday selling for $340,000 and $320,000.
For Blake Ryan, it was “the best day of my life. My working life, that is’’.
For Damian Lane, it was “huge, unheard of to be honest. Stupid even’’.
And for Prima Park’s Kelly Van Dyk, it was “definitely something we didn’t expect’’.
A series of spectacular results highlighted a solid day of trade at Riverside today for the 2019 Inglis Ready2Race Sale, which showed further signs of positivity from the domestic market especially.
Van Dyk’s Deep Field x Blueridge Cat gelding (pictured) topped the sale, selling to George Moore Bloodstock for $340,000.
The colt was originally purchased by Prima Park and Waterford Bloodstock as a weanling at the Inglis Great Southern Sale.
“He was a stunning horse, he obviously breezed up exceptionally but to come here and be rewarded with the sale-topping price is pretty special,’’ Van Dyk said.
“The vibe has been great here at Riverside the past few days, there’s been plenty of people around and full credit goes to Inglis for what they’ve done in getting the buyers here but also the right buyers and diverse group of them. We’re really happy.’’
Moore purchased a Deep Field colt at the Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year for $425,000 and said that particular colt had done so well, he wanted another one in his stable.
“This horse has the right temperament and a nice big action on him,’’ Moore said of today’s purchase.
“He was one of the nicest Deep Fields here and we were actually on two of them but I liked this one a bit more because he looks to be more of a speed horse.’’
Moore was one of several Hong Kong clients to find their way onto the buyers’ sheet at today’s sale, joining buyers from countries such as China, Macau, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand.
But what was most noticeable was the expanse in the domestic buyer market for a 2YO sale – the likes of Mick Price, Bjorn Baker, Anton Koolman, Andrew Williams, Mark Newnham, Kim Waugh, Darby Racing, Aquis Farm, Ciaron Maher, Lloyd Kennewell, Ellerton Zahra Racing, Daniel Bowman, Brett Cavanough and Barbara Joseph to name just a few.
Damian Lane of Glenvale Park - which he runs with his father-in-law Bob Law – had a day to remember.
Not only did he offer the second-top lot (a Deep Field x Prinny’s Girl colt which sold to Horse Feng Bloodstock for $320,000, a horse Lane purchased for just $21,000 at Scone in May) but he also secured $140,000 for a Real Impact x Madison park colt to Casper Fownes, which was originally a $25,000 Classic Yearling Sale buy.
“It’s been phenomenal, those two results, that doesn’t even sound right,’’ a shocked Lane said.
“This is huge for us. That type of money, it’s unheard of to be honest. When the bidding kept going and going, I was getting pretty emotional to be honest.
“It’s been a memorable day with some memorable results. Good luck to the buyers, I know you have bought great horses.’’
For Ryan there were similarly great results as Lane, including a Real Impact x Only Roses colt which sold to Andrew Williams Bloodstock for $310,000, making it the day’s third-top lot, as well as a Headwater colt which sold for $240,000.
“The Real Impact, he bought a tear to my eye. I copped some flak for putting the neck out and paying $75,000 for a trade horse by a first season stallion but everything has worked out perfectly with him,’’ Ryan said.
“The Headwater, he progressed really well but to get $240,000, I’m just blown away by it to be honest.
“This is the best day of my life. My working life, although it’s pretty close to best day ever. It’s 4-5 years in the making, it’s very satisfying. I can reinvest in confidence now at next year’s Classic Sale.’’
The results an average of $79,301 and a gross of $7,771,500
“The top of the market was exceptionally positive and there were some extraordinarily results which were very pleasing,’’ Inglis GM of Bloodstock Sales and Marketing Sebastian Hutch said.
“The appetite for quality horses and the competition for them amongst what was a deep group of buyers was very strong.
“However in the case of horses where the key measures were a little bit off, particularly in terms of the quality of the breeze or vetting, buyers treated such horses harshly.
“As ever, we expect the clearance rate to improve further over the coming days as we complete additional private sales.
