Bob Scarborough Makes His Mark at The Arc Sale

Former Wood Nook Stud proprietor, Bob Scarborough, the breeder of this year's 2,000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia, made his mark at The Arc Sale when he paid the second top price of €750,000, through Belmont Bloodstock, for three-year-old filly Cartiem.

A last start third in the Group II Prix de la Nonette the Jean-Claude Rouget trained filly is entered in the Prix de l'Opera (Gr.1) tomorrow at Longchamp.

A half-sister to Listed stakes-winner Mila (Cape Cross) and the Group II Prix de Malleret runner-up Mandistana, who is now part of the Arrowfield Stud broodmare band, Cartiem is a daughter of Mintaka (Zamindar) who is out of the Group III winning Linamix mare Minatlya who is a sister to Peter Moody's wonderful import Manhigar the winner of the Group 1 VRC Australian Cup, Group 1 ATC Ranvet Stakes and Group 1 ATC The BMW.


The highest price of the sale was paid by Michael Mirolo's Oceanic Bloodstock who shelled out €850,000 for Wertheimer & Frère's Group III Prix de Guiche winner Flop Shot who finished third in the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano (Gr.II) and Prix Eugene Adam (Gr.II).

The three-year-old son of New Approach will now run in the colours of American owner Peter Brant (White Birch Farm), who is represented by August Yearling Sale graduate Sottsass in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday.




Third top price of €710,000 was paid by Dennis Loh with agent Emmanuel de Seroux for the unbeaten Chares.

The Listed Criterium du Lyon is ultimately bound for Hong Kong however the 2yo son of Ivawood has more to offer in Europe.

"He'll first go into training in Newmarket before going to Hong Kong, but we don't know with which trainer yet," said Dennis Loh. "We are looking for very good horses for Hong Kong, and he ticked all the boxes. He's very good-looking and walks well - his latest win was very impressive."

Buyers from around the world attended the Arc Sale, with the final figures showing strong rises in comparison to last year. Of the 39 lots that went under the hammer, 25 were sold for an average of €252,000 (+40%) for a total turnover of €6,3 million (+23%).
