Mystic
Journey might not be the only Tasmanian superstar in Melbourne this spring with
the Scott Brunton trained Dundeel gelding The Inevitable scoring a scintillating
four length win in the Listed MVRC Bendigo Bank Stakes at Moonee Valley on
Saturday.
A first up winner at Flemington over 1000 metres in early August, The Inevitable was freshened after that run in preparation for this 1200 metre sprint and produced a career best performance to win as he pleased.
Ridden quietly from a wide gate, Craig Williams was able to make ground mid race on the tiny gelding who loomed into the lead as they turned for home. He zoomed away from his rivals up the straight to win with real authority taking his overall record to seven wins and a third from just nine starts with prizemoney just shy of $400,000.
"He was very dominant today," said Williams.
"He's only a small horse, but he's a pocket rocket!"
Scott Brunton was a relieved man after the win, revealing he had misgivings about The Inevitable, feeling his coat was not quite right and he was a little tucked up from the trip over from Tasmania.
"Obviously I know nothing," he quipped after the win, indicating the Group I MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) would be a likely target as well as the $7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m) in Sydney in November.
"He's a ripper. He's just fantastic.
"Dad bought him as a yearling. He's lengthened out, but he's never grown."
Sometimes size is not everything!
A $90,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase for David Brunton from the Cornerstone Stud draft was bred by Tori Park Stud. He is a half-brother to Group III winner Blahnik and stakes-winner Elysees being one of 11 winners from sensational producer Gift Bouquet, a stakes-winning daughter of Kings High. Born when she was 21, he is also her final foal as she died last year.
The Inevitable is one of nine stakes-winners for Arrowfield Stud's top class young sire Dundeel, who stands this spring at a fee of $66,000.
