Karaka Million Filly Tops South Island Sale

Media Release - Monday April 29

Southern vendor White Robe Lodge is no stranger to New Zealand Bloodstock's South Island Sale.

They produced recent stakes winners Civil Disobedience(NZ) (Raise the Flag) and Parthesia(NZ) (Raise the Flag) from this sale ring, and today they marked the beginning of several new hopeful success stories as 61 lots went under the hammer.

Per Incanto filly from Cherry CreekWhile the operation has continued their leading vendor by aggregate streak for the last three consecutive years, they also sold the highest priced yearling from this year's catalogue.

One of the last yearlings to enter the ring atLot 57, the filly by Per Incanto out of stakes-winning mare Cherry Creek is a half-sister to Group Three winner Coulee(NZ) (Gallant Guru). With a quality pedigree, her price reflected just that and was knocked down to the bid of local buyer Graeme Anderson for $72,500 – the second leading buyer overall.

"I was really pleased to obtain such a quality filly from the south, I thought she was a strong filly who could make an early going two-year-old or Thousand Guineas type of horse," commented Anderson who has nominated her for the Karaka Million Series.

"The ownership will be shared with a few other local owners and friends so we'll be looking forward to having a bit of fun with her."

White Robe Lodge sold seven yearlings for an aggregate of $220,500 and a leading average price of $31,500.

Vendor Brian Anderton ONZM commented, "The Sale was good, it was good to see a lot of agents here and we were happy with how we sold."

"I have some great clients down here and we need to lead by example in supporting the South Island Sale."

Another familiar name associated with stakes-winning graduates of this Sale is bloodstock agent John Foote. Having been the astute judge and buyer of Civil Disobedience and Parthesia, today he secured four yearlings for $136,000 in receipts, placing him at the top of the purchasers table by aggregate.

The top price that Foote outlaid was $60,000 forLot 23, a well-related colt by Makfi offered on account of Mentally Stable.

"John has been an amazing supporter of the Sale for many years and has shown his hand once again," commented NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook.

"Although numbers were low for the Sale, it remains well supported by buyers and we look forward to increasing numbers for next year's edition."

Te Akau Racing's David Ellis was the third leading buyer by aggregate and secured three yearlings throughout the day for a total spend of $75,000, including Mansfield Farm's well-related Zacinto colt (Lot 4).

Ellis purchased this season's promising two-year-old fillyHarlow(NZ) (Proisir) from the Sale last year, and looks to emulate similar results with these lots.

Dual code buyer and standardbred trainer David Butt went to $55,000 to secure Paritai Farm'sLot 18, a colt by first season sire Mongolian Khan who will be syndicated and raced.

Other active buyers included the likes of syndicator Go Racing (one lot for $39,000), bloodstock agent Stuart Hale (one lot for $12,000), and Asian buyers Upper Bloodstock (one lot for $20,000) and Tao Gu (two lots for $40,000).

Southern sires topped the leading sire by average list (three or more sold) with Ghibellines fetching an average of $28,875 for four lots sold and Zacinto reaching an average of $21,500 for six lots sold.

Second season sire Proisir, whose second-ever winner was Harlow, rounded out the top three sires with a top price of $17,500 from his four lots sold.

With a reduction to 61 lots in the catalogue this year, at the close of selling figures remained upbeat with the average and clearance rate up from 2018.

A total of 42 lots sold for an aggregate of $665,650. The average rose to $15,849 (up from $13,869) and the clearance rate to 75% (up from 61%) with the median settling at $9,000.

All yearlings purchased at the South Island Sale are eligible to be nominated for theKaraka Million Serieswith two $1 million races to be contested. Nominations close at 5pm on Wednesday 29 May.
