Winx Partner – Our Audience Have Their Say

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday April 17
There has been no shortage of responses from our readers keen to offer their thoughts on who they believe is the most suitable stallion for Winx in her first season at stud.

If you wish to contribute email us at media@breednet.com.au and below are a selection of responses.

Free of Danehill so the obvious is Snitzel but if I owned her Deep Impact – Lainie

Winx will be heading to stud for the first time this springI believe I Am Invincible is the stallion as that was what Winx was – Invincible – Heather

Winx brings special unique qualities that need to be saved and past onto future generations: great leg speed, determination and longevity.

Winx has the potential to become as important to the Thoroughbred as mare like Urban Sea and Eight Carat, with stallions that can combine with and enhance her abilities.

In Australia: The Autumn Sun – the best moving colt for many years (apart from Criterion), with determination responsiveness fight and finishing speed as the mare, and a pedigree to suit, bringing speed and resilience, and one of the best "built" horses available

Overseas: Sea the Stars – his Arc win showed the same leg speed as Winx, something that needs to be preserved for future generations; WInx would add speed to Sea the Star's stamina. - Greg

Dundeel would put some longer stamina in her – Trevor

Galileo – Vivienne

DUNDEEL . Ideal stallion for first mating, physically and mentally with his progeny showing speed and grit. It will only get better. Every studmaster in the world will be offering free lifetime services to the stallion of M's choice. - John

Winx has to go to The Autumn Sun , great match on type, pedigree and performance. He will no doubt be a star at stud so why wouldn't you start with him. – Ashley

Exceed and Excel will hopefully make the offspring more precocious and he is such a good underrated sire. – Simon

I Am Invincible - No brainer .......best Australian sire , and only getting better - produces great types , great natured horses , and this cross will produce a similar cross like Territories who is a great sort himself - Mark

Pierro, Lonhro, Fiorento, Kementari, American Pharoah , as they have speed and stamina like her. They have all got classic thoroughbred beauty like her - Sharon

As there are no "blue hen" mares in the pedigree of Winx which afford any line-breeding, she is depending on the maternal influence of Street Cry which will carry her to most stallions. Machiavellian bred to daughters of Troy has yielded 100% winners to runners with an average earning index of 15.1
The obvious choice might appear to be Justify as the nick is rated as A++, however the average winning distance for the foals is 1500m which is "neither your arse nor your elbow" in terms of prize money in Australia.
I would give Written Tycoon the nod as the nick is rated as A+, the cross yields 76% winners to runners and the average winning of 1200m targets the high-stakes sprint distance in Australia. In addition, Written Tycoon's progeny are well conformed and extremely sound racehorses. – Peter

She should go to Zoustar . Establishing himself as a great stallion in the making currently being on top of the second season sires and 3yo sires list. With spring coming around and another autumn before their foal would be born, he will be stamping himself close to the top of the list of Australian sires. He also had an explosive turn of foot which will compliment hers with a little luck. - Andrew

I am not an industry participant but I have been a racing fan for 40 years. My nominations for the stallion to cover Winx would be:

Australia: I AM INVINCIBLE - He is doing incredible things given his $10,000 service fee beginnings. His number of stakeswinners this season is enough to send any mare to him.

United Kingdom: LOPE DE VEGA - A very good source of stakes winners already proven here from limited crops. The pedigree match reveals three crosses of Machiavellian and two crosses of the influential mare Helen Street.

Japan: LORD KANALOA - A tremendous young sire who had exceptional speed but is getting progeny who race over all distances. The duplication of Blakeney is also intriguing

USA: KANTHAROS - This is out of left field, but this stallion has done amazing things with runners on all surfaces. The five generation pedigree chart has plenty of interesting duplications also.

New Zealand: ROARING LION - The resulting progeny would be 4 x 2 Street Cry. He was such a fabulous race horse that I'd just love to see these two champions brought together. - Glenn

Definitely Dundeel or Fiorente , both getting youngsters with group one speed and will train on to be classic and cup types. Sure hope they don't fall for cheap speed, and down the track would look at a stallion with a line of Street Cry in its pedigree - Ian

I think Winx should visit Lonhro in her first season at stud to produce the same cross as the Blue Diamond winner in Lyre. Precocious 2 year old with the speed to win a Blue Diamond and might be trained on at three - Marcus
I think Winx should go to The Autumn Sun because the Champion mare & the Champion Colt would be a match made in heaven. And they are probably already in love, once being stable mates. - Steve

I would love to see them send her to Lonhro as they are two of my favourite horses and the foal would still be free of Danehill – Ben

1) I Am Invincible
2) So You Think
3) Deep Field
4) Snitzel – David

I Am Invincible – Peter

For what it's worth I would go for a proven sire like Lonhro or I Am Invincible. Snitzel I don't think would fit' physically.- Craig

I'd love to see her go to Lohnro as the best racehorse of all time mating with the great Sir Tristam/Zabeel line and having Eight Carat in that pedigree is mouth watering. Plus I think with her turn of foot and Lohnro's turn of foot surely It would only have to be like mum or dad or grandfather's to be half decent.. David
The Autumn Sun or Highland Reel , either one of these will produce a champion horse – Keoni

We have chosen Capitalist . With this mating you bring in Danehill (the top nick for Street Cry), Last Tycoon (who TYCOON LIL was by and she is from the same family). Success Express being Savabeels sire and the top Nick being O'REILLY. It would be nice to double up on the Riverman but stallions carrying that line are on the lower price schedule – JNC Racing

Lonhro , similar distance range when racing and he has produced the Blue Diamond winner from a Street Cry mare this year plus his age, get in while they can - Peter

I won't be alone in this, but it should be Snitzel for mine – Michael

Lope de Vega.. A magnificent racehorse. His Prix de Poulains win was Winx like. He's not a gorilla, he's an athlete and at just over 16h, not too big. Admittedly his head is one that only his mother could love (he can blame Vettori for that!). He's delivering at stud and reminds us of the contribution to our breeding stock of a certain Mr N Tinkler.

However his dalliance with Winx would deliver an offspring with some great genetic material. Sister and Brother, Helsinki and Street Cry..carrying the genes of the stunning Derby winner Troy. The big picture stuff is Storm Cat over Mr Prospector.. I'm sure Mr Ken Maclean would enjoy that. The young un may not win a Slipper, but as a 3yo and upward could win anything.

And if the prospect of a Winx mating will entice Lope de Vega back to Australia, that would be the icing on the cake. - Andrew

I think she should go to stallion who suits her physically & temperament ! I suggest Zoustar ! You need to go to a stallion who will put that speed in her pedigree! Deep Impact not serving & Frankel to far! - Colleen

Who else ? THE ONLY UNBEATEN US TRIPLE CROWN WINNER, EVER. US Horse of the Year 2018. Justify – Greg
