Impressive Debut Winner for Deep Field

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday April 3
Astute trainer Mark Newnham unearthed a very promising youngster at Randwick on Wednesday in the juvenile maiden with a debut victory for Deep Field gelding Deep Sea.

Deep Sea as a yearlingSecond in his only two previous trials, Deep Sea raced a little greenly and was inclined to be erratic in transit, but when angled into the clear by Josh Parr was able to hit the line hard and win the 1150 metre spring running away by a length and a quarter.

"You don't usually see them win like that after doing so much wrong," said Mark Newnham.

"He has good ability, but we have to teach him to relax a bit better."

Deep Sea was bought from the NZB Ready to Run Sale by his trainer for $75,000 out of the JK Farm draft and was a successful pinhook having been bought initially from the Bowness Stud draft at the Magic Millions for $46,000 by Ric Wylie Bloodstock.

"He just looked like a real sprinter and in hindsight we look to have got him at a good price," Newnham said.

"He might have one more run and then he can have a little break and look towards the spring."

Deep Sea is the first winner for minor winning Dubawi (IRE) mare Isabel Street, who comes from an imported US Black type family.

He is the sixth winner for Newgate Farm's Deep Field, who is building a tidy record of smart winners headed by his Group III winner Cosmic Force.
