Deep Field Colt Charges into Golden Slipper

Tara Madgwick - Saturday March 16
Exciting colt Cosmic Force was the first winner for Newgate Farm's young gun Deep Field when saluting on debut last November and became his first stakes-winner with a dazzling seven length victory in the Group III ATC Pago Pago Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained colt was second at his first two runs back from a spell to Bivouac and Microphone in stakes races, but soared to new heights in this final Golden Slipper lead up.

Cosmic Force was in a class of his own, checking in some seven and a quarter lengths in front of Born a Warrior ($1.4 million Inglis Easter ) and Stronger ($1,050,000 Inglis Easter), He also clocked significantly quicker time than the fillies division won by Kiamichi.

"He was so strong on the line," said James Macdonald, who was clearly impressed with Cosmic Force, joking that he'd be happy to swap his Golden Slipper mount Tenley for the colt.

"He gave me an unbelievable feel. He felt enormous!"

Paul Snowden believes the best is still to come for Cosmic Force, who will back up in next week's $3.5 million Golden Slipper.

"He's very tough. He didn't get the best of runs being three deep with no cover and he still won," he said.

"He does really well in the stable, so there will be no drama about him backing up."

A half-brother to the Group III winner Onemorezeta, Cosmic Force was a $180,000 purchase by China Horse Club Racing / Newgate Farm / WinStar from the Ascot Park draft at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and has won two of four starts earning $178,065.

Bred by Bob Hannon at his Ascot Park Stud west of Sydney, he is the sixth winner from seven to race out of the Commands mare Little Zeta who is a half-sister to Listed ATC Ming Dynasty Stakes winner and multiple Group placed More Than Great.

Little Zeta has a weanling filly by Your Song and was covered again last spring by Deep Field.

A record-breaking sprinter that won five of his eight starts, Deep Field is emerging as another successful sire son for ill-fated Northern Meteor and comes from the family of top-class sires Commands and Danewin.

He was super popular with breeders last spring covering 246 mares at a fee of $22,000.
